英文學習怪招

我當年在留美考托福時考了650,自覺對英文很有些心得,也因此寫出自己的經驗,十幾年前曾在網上貼過。最近到大陸有朋友要求我傳授他讀國一的兒子些絕招,所以又把文章搞出來翻成中文。貼在這裡,希望能對仍在學或剛出校園不久的網友們有點幫助。

It has been more than 13 years since I took the TOEFL and GRE. I did very well in vocabularies and I believe you can too if you follow
what I'm going to tell you.
Although I discovered and refined this method myself, it is possible that someone else may come up with similar approach. Anyway, here it goes:
字彙以及片語是學語文的基礎,它們就好像機槍里的子彈,如果數量不夠,那就學不好。
以下這篇是我二十幾年前考托福時的創見,主要專注在單字以及片語的加強,文法以及聽力以後再敘
1) find a good dictionary (read: no children's dictionary)
找一本好字典,最好裡面已經有標明常用字(一顆星、兩顆星)
2) start from page 1, identify those words you are interested to learn and
從第一頁開始,把常用字挑出來
2a) mark it
做記號,我通常是用原子筆把該字底下畫線
2b) pronounce it correctly, spell it, understand what it is and recite its meaning(s) in Chinese
找出正確發音念出來,拼出字母,瞭解它的幾個最重要的意義
2c) in the mean time, write/scribble it on paper
同時,用筆在廢紙上拼出(最好是小草)它的字母,不要看,只要寫,讓手也動一動
2d) do the same thing (mark, recite, scribble, ...) on the most common phrases consisted of this word (eg: addition - in addition to)
該字的重要片語也畫線,也念出來(同2a以及2b)
3) don't recite and scribble any single word for more than 10 or 15 times. it takes much longer to mark those words in the first pass, so be patient.
不要在一個字上搞太久,頂多念、寫個10到15次
4) It appears to take forever for the first pass, and even after you've finished with the 1st pass, you may not remember more vacabulary than you did before. Don't worry, starting from the 2nd pass and you'd find that you can go a bit faster than the previous pass; keep up the speed and you will do well.
把整個字典走一遍在第一次會非常慢,所以需要有耐心。而且第一遍走完以後,可能還是記不得多少字彙,不要擔心!
從第二次以後,你的速度會越來越快,而且記得的字數也會明顯增加。
5) when you are on your 3rd pass, you'd most definitely remember 1/4 of the selected vocabularies. in the same time, when you are resting, you should try to read some English magazines so that you can identify words you've been reciting from different sources and thus enhance your memory on those words. this will also give you confidence that you are on the right track.
當你走到第三次時,你應該可以記得四分之一的字彙以及片語。這時候,你應該嘗試讀一些英文雜誌或小說,這樣不僅能增加你的信心,而且從不同的地方看到背過的字時,對該字的印象也會非常深刻。
6) if you are on your 4th or 5th pass, TOEFL is no challenge to you already; however, forget about GRE vocabularies, it is not worth it.
如果你已經背到第四、五次時,托福已經難不倒你。在報章雜誌、或者其他來源上看到新字,別忘了也把它在字典里找到,畫線。
7) as you progress from 1 pass to the next, you will find that you can skip more and more words as you already know them so well. also, you'd find that you only scribble 3 or 4 times (v.s. 10, 15 or 20 times) and thus you will be doing the pass faster and faster.
每多走完一次,你會發現會有越來越多的字你已經不用再看,已經熟悉了,這時就可以盡快跳過。而且你只需要在紙上劃個三、四次,不像一開始的10-15次,這樣你走完一遍的速度會越來越快
8) when you can go through the entire dictionary in 1 or 2 weeks, you are done. once again, the trick is "speed" - if you dragging along slowly, when you reached the end, you may not remember those in the beginning or even those in the middle.
當你能把整個字典在一個禮拜走完一遍時,你已經成功了!
記得:這方法的訣竅是速度,如果你走完一遍的速度太慢,那在走到底時,絕對無法記得開頭、甚至中間的字彙。
[Explanation]
這方法的背景解釋:
Memory needs to be refreshed from time to time and if we spent too much time trying to remember in one shot, the process would be both boring and straneous and it only brings your spirit down.
人的記憶是必須要重複更新,才能持久。如果我們花太多的時間想要一次把東西記得,那這個過程多半是非常辛苦的,而且效果也不好。
I've found I'd do better if I see the same word from different sources (as a different stimulus to the brain?) in addition to from the dictionary.
我發現如果從不同的來源看到同樣的字,那我會記得更快。這就是為什麼要看看英文書刊、雜誌,甚至聽聽英文節目
With this sequencial method (from page 1 and up), you know exactly where you are (or which page/letter you are) and it gives you a sense of accomplishments as you progress from one page/letter to the next.
以這種從A背起的方式,你會知道自己的進度,而且會給你一定的成就感
After you've finished the 2nd pass, you should try to identify the relationships of words and you should attempt to connect words of the similar or opposite meaning together. After 3rd or 4th pass you should be able to read generic magazines such as Newsweeks with little difficulty. Keeps on adding/marking those new words you didn't mark before.
在背完第二遍以後,你應該試著去把同義字以及反義字串連起來。這意思就是說,當你看到一個字,你知道還有同義字/反義字時,如果不很確定,那就翻一下字典,看看你記得對不對
As this method requires non-interrupted, full (8 or more hours a day) dedication and takes a few months to finish, you may want to try it in smaller scale (say, find any 100 words) and see for yourselves if it works or not.
這個方法需要很專注,也很花時間。如果你想先試一試,那不妨找一本兒童字典來著手。
Good luck. Oh, if you wish to communicate with me, send me emails to the following address as I don't read this board on regular basis.
祝你成功,如果需要和我聯絡,請寄EMAIL到 karltsai@gmail.com
